New Devoucoux Saddle

Who would have guessed that buying a saddle would be so complicated. When I was a child I tacked up my horse with any dusty saddle in the barn and rode off into the fields until dinner time. These days I’m shopping all over the internet and local tack stores for a saddle for my daughter. I’ve tried saddles from Amerigo, Antares, Stubben and Devoucoux. Not to mention, I’ve spent hours studying correct tree angle, balance of the saddle and wither clearance to write a thesis.
After two months of searching for the “correct fitting” saddle I called Brittany, the Deveoucoux Representative in Sacramento. Brittany came to the ranch with two saddles for my daughter to try ; one was too small (15″ seat with a short flap) and one was too big (16.5″ with a two flap). Brittany measured Katelyn and determined that she needed a 16″ seat with a one flap. Brittany contacted all of the Devoucoux Representatives across the country to find us a used saddle. This particular size wasn’t to be found, so we ended up ordering a custom saddle. My husband was thrilled that we were going to be spending more money on tack!
Six weeks later we were the proud owners of a new Devoucoux saddle. The saddle was shipped in a large cardboard barrel with complete instructions on saddle care for the next century! Coat the saddle with Devoucoux Belharra Leather Balsam using a sheepskin glove, let the saddle sit overnight, the next day gloss the leather with a clean soft lint-free rag, after your initial greasing clean the saddle with the Belharra Leather Soap using a soft lint-free rag, sponge or Devoucoux sheepskin glove, continue this process for the first 15 uses of your new saddle. Luckily, my daughter loves to polish her tack because this new saddle is given more care than a newborn baby!

Ha – what a great story. Yes, times have changed! I grew up with horses and my experience sounds more similar to yours. I’m sure Katelyn will be a good mother to the baby.
